Garden Route
The Garden Route stretches on the southern coast from Heidelberg in the west to the Tsitsikamma Forest and Storms River in the east. Travelling from Cape Town, west to Port Elizabeth, east, the main towns are, Heidelberg, Witsand, Riversdale, Still Bay, Albertinia, Mossel Bay, Hartenbos, Little and Great Brak River, George, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Natures Valley and Tsitsikamma National Park. The region has a well developed tourist infrastructure with magnificent towns dotted all along the coast. The area also boasts two national parks Tsitsikamma and Wilderness, as well as numerous other provincial and private nature reserves. Magnificent mountains push towards the sea, where the shoreline is dotted with delightful beaches and bays, whilst glorious shows of wild flowers bemuse the senses and enchant the eye. From Heidelberg to Storms River, the route runs parallel to a coastline awash with lakes, coves, waterfalls, and lagoons, mountains and meanders, tall indigenous forests and tranquil valleys, amber coloured rivers and golden beaches. Hikers follow leisurely trails, the forests invite long, carefree drives, whilst the lakes and rivers provide unlimited opportunities for swimming, canoeing, white water rafting, fishing and much more.
